Venepuncture is a very common, and widely used medical facility. All over the UK, medical universities and institutions provide venepuncture courses to students who are interested to pursue this field as a career. Venepuncture courses are vital for a phlebotomist, enabling him/her to provide good patient-care to the people. These courses are not lengthy or complex. Some only take one day to complete; making an individual a knowledgeable under-phlebotomist (not a full, capable phlebotomist). The one-day Venepuncture and Cannulation (V&C) workshop programmes enables a competent and accomplished practitioner, to carry out venepuncture and intravenous cannulation in the safest of manner, in the work place setting for the patients and clients. These courses are scheduled to enhance and broaden the V&C skills of newly-registered nurses, which can be completed in one setting; either on-site or in-house.


The following objectives should be understood by each participant:

  1. Realize and be aware of the risks caused by blood borne pathogens
  2. Should appreciate the importance of self-hygiene and skin decontamination
  3. Should be able to identify anatomical structures of the vascular system and pick appropriate sites for venepuncture
  4. Correct and appropriate use of equipments used for phlebotomy
  5. Be familiar with the correct waste disposal of sharps, gloves etc.

  1. PowerPoint presentations
  2. Lecturer/instructor assisted
  3. MCQ examinations in pre-course learning phase

Topics of the Course:

  1. Accountability of phlebotomists/registered nurses
  2. Contraindications, complications, indications
  3. Anatomy and physiology of veins and blood vessels
  4. Practice demonstrations
  5. Practical sessions for venepuncture and cannulation techniques
  6. Vein selection.


  1. These courses are eligible for adults; this is a ‘must’ requirement.
  2. The online e-learning materials should be completed before taking the courses. The necessary information and details are emailed to candidates using email addresses.
  3. Competent assessors assess candidates on the basis of how they are proficient in V&C skills regarding local or GP policy. On the approvement of these assessors, candidates are passed and allowed to continue this profession.


   The duration of these course depend upon the type of course you have opted or taken. While some takes years, others might just require 8 hours of workshop, with 10-12 candidates in a session.


  The one-day courses do not make you certified; hence they are no considerable certification granted. Nonetheless, a candidate gets a certification of attendance which could prove helpful in the candidate’s phelebotomy future.
